Offshore Shellfish Ltd. are developing the UK’s first large-scale offshore rope cultured mussel farm. Following successful pilot trials in 2014/15 the farm is currently being expanded to its full permitted area. The development will eventually be the largest of its type in European waters and will use specially designed technology to cultivate the native blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, on suspended ropes at three sites between 3 and 6 miles offshore in the fertile waters of Lyme Bay. The three sites will cover a total area of 15.4 square km and produce up to 10,000 tonnes per year once fully developed. Advantages include space and improved water quality. There is also the potential for other shellfish species & seaweed cultivation.
